The Best Time to Visit Kruger — Month by Month
There is no bad month for a Kruger safari — but there is a right month for the safari you have in mind. Game viewing, birding, photography, green landscapes and value all peak at different times of year. Here is how we think about it when we plan.
May to September — the dry season
This is the classic safari window. The bush thins out, water sources shrink to a handful of rivers and waterholes, and wildlife concentrates around them. Sightings are more reliable and easier to photograph, and there are almost no mosquitoes.
Mornings are cold — genuinely cold on an open vehicle in June and July — so pack layers, a beanie and gloves. Afternoons are mild and dry. This is also peak season, so lodges book out early, especially over school holidays.

October to November — the shoulder
October is hot and dry, and often superb for game viewing right before the rains break. November brings the first storms, the bush greens up, and impala lambs start arriving — which in turn brings predators into the open.
Rates soften compared with peak season, and lodges are quieter. If you are travelling on a considered budget but still want strong game viewing, this is often the sweet spot.
December to March — the green season
Summer is lush, dramatic and photographically beautiful: towering clouds, long light and vivid colour. Migrant birds arrive, and the birding is at its best. Wildlife is more dispersed because water is everywhere, so sightings take a little more patience and a good guide matters more.
Rain usually comes as short, heavy afternoon storms rather than all-day drizzle. Malaria risk is higher in summer, so prophylaxis advice is worth taking seriously — or consider a malaria-free reserve if you are travelling with young children.

April — the quiet month we love
April is underrated. The bush is still green from the summer rains, the air is clear, temperatures are comfortable, and the crowds have gone. It is a lovely month to combine a Panorama Route drive with three or four nights in a private reserve.
How we would plan it
For a first safari we usually suggest three to four nights in a private Greater Kruger concession between May and September, where off-road traversing and night drives are permitted. For a return visit, or for photographers, we often steer towards the green season and a longer stay in one camp.
