Combining Cape Town and Safari in One Trip
It is the most requested South African itinerary for good reason: mountain, ocean, wine and wildlife in a single trip. The difference between a great version and an exhausting one comes down to routing and pacing.
Start in the Cape, finish in the bush
We almost always sequence Cape Town first. You arrive with jet lag into a city where late starts are perfectly acceptable, then move to the bush once your body clock has settled — which matters when game drives begin at 05h30.
It also means your trip ends slowly, with sundowners rather than city traffic.
Give Cape Town four nights
Three nights is tight. Cape Town loses days to weather: Table Mountain closes in wind, and Cape Point is far better on a clear morning. Four nights gives you a flexible day to move plans around, plus a full day in the Winelands.
Choose your reserve by season and by travellers
Greater Kruger delivers the strongest Big Five game viewing and the widest choice of lodges, reached by a short flight to Hoedspruit or Skukuza. The malaria-free Eastern Cape reserves are closer to the Garden Route and easier with young children, though the wildlife density is generally lower.
- Travelling with children under six: consider a malaria-free reserve
- Photography-led trip: Greater Kruger private concession, four nights minimum
- Adding the Garden Route: allow at least four extra nights, self-drive or private guide
A shape that works
Four nights Cape Town, one night Winelands, then a flight to the reserve for four nights, ending with a same-day connection home from Johannesburg. Ten nights, two flights, no wasted days — and it can be scaled up or down around your dates.
